Understanding China – Outlook And Video Presentation

by Olivier on February 3, 2011

Excellent thoughts on China, its economy and its culture. The essence of the video is about understanding the differences between the East and the West and why trying to understand the Chinese mentality as a Westerner is highly problematic. Here’s a few subjects Martin Jacques, author of ‘When China rules the world’ talks about:

  • Chinese civilization
  • Chinese values
  • Nation state mentality vs. civilization state mentality
  • Cultural identity (Han identity) + notion of race
  • Relationship between state and society
  • Legitimacy, authority and concept of the Chinese state
  • Western concept cannot grasp China and the Chinese mentality
  • East Asia is more knowledgeable about the West than the other way round

Martin Jacques appropriately ends his video presentation about China with the following conclusion:

Welcome to the future!

– Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to drop back.
– The greatest conqueror is he who overcomes the enemy without a blow.
– If you plan for a year, plant rice. If you plan for ten years, plant trees. If you plan for 100 years, educate your children. – Chinese Proverbs
